Readers pay attentions to how the characters respond as the plot unfolds towards a resolution.

Events of the Plot

Rose’s Actions

Blanche’s Action

  1. Aunty took each girl to her farm.

She laughed and made fun of the animals.

She did not laugh, not wanting to hurt Aunty’s feelings.

2. Aunty gave each girl an old beef bone to put in the pot for dinner.

When the old woman gave her an old bone to put in the pot, Rose said crossly, “That’s gonna make a mighty poor meal.” They only had thin soup for dinner.

Blanche did what the woman asked her, even though she was starving. Before long the pot was bubbling over with thick stew.
