My name is Karen Carney and I am currently a third grade teacher at Campbell Elementary School in Campbell, Ohio. I have been teaching for 28 years and am beginning my fourth year in third grade. I previously taught first grade for 18 years and was the District Literacy Coach for seven years. I organized and chaired the District Literacy Committee and led professional development opportunities for faculty and staff during that tenure.
I hold a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, A Master's Degree in Curriculum and the Reading Endorsement from Youngstown State University. I also earned The Literacy Specialist Endorsement fron The University of Akron--being one of the first "21" in the state of Ohio to earn that endorsement.
I am an adjunct professor at Youngstown State University where I have taught pre-service teachers in the Teacher Education Department for the past nine years. I also present at state and ocal conferences, develop and deliver workshops, and serve as an educational consultant.
I am involved with many professional organizations at the local, state and national levels. I am past-president of OCTELA (Ohio Councl of Teachers of English Lannguage Arts: 2011-2012) where I continue to serve as Conference Coordnator. I was also the president of the Mahoning Valley Council of the Internationsl Reading Association (1999-2000).
I am a member of the Campbell Education Association, serving as Treasurer since 2001. I also sit on the Leadership Development Committee for NEOEA and an OEA Core Function Committee Member. I was recently appointed to the Ohio Educator Standards Board in 2013.
In 2012, I was named the Outstanding Educator by the Beeghly College of Education, Youngstown State University and OCTELA's 2004 Outstanding English Language Arts Educator.
I enjoy spending time with my family, beach vacations and going to Cleveland Indians games--not to mention reading!
