Richard G. Barr, MD, PhD, FACR, FSRU, FAIUM

Hall of Fame inductee,Dr. Barr, a 1974 CMHS graduate, is a renowned radiologist and highly sought after speaker. Richard is a lifelong advocate of the city of Campbell and the Mahoning Valley. Currently, Dr. Barr is a professor of radiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio and practices at Southwoods Imaging in Boardman, Ohio. Although he could practice anywhere in the world, he chooses to practice in the Mahoning Valley. Dr. Barr states, “Growing up in Campbell, I have strong ties here. It is as simple as that--I want to make a difference at home”.
Dr. Barr is the son of Frank and Minnie (Fognini) Barr. Richard’s older brother, Dennis, was a 1961 Campbell Memorial High School graduate. His sister, Katherine Louise, died in infancy. Dr. Barr was extremely active in a number of diverse activities in high school. An accomplished musician, Richard played trombone in the marching and pep bands and bass clarinet in the concert band. He was also a member of the Math, French and Chemistry Clubs and served as president of the National Honor Society and the Speech and Debate Team.
After graduation from high school, Dr. Barr began his lifelong pursuit of education. Richard received his BS in Chemistry at The Ohio State University, a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at Michigan State University and his MD from Case Western Reserve University. He completed a year internship in internal medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland and a Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Barr also completed a cross sectional imaging fellowship at University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Barr has published over 100 peer reviewed papers, several book chapters, and two books “Breast Elastography” and “Elastography, a Practical Approach”. He has presented over 400 scientific and educational presentations and his work has been given special recognition in Newsweek, Time, Reader’s Digest, O-Magazine and More Magazine.. Additionally, Dr. Barr has been involved in the fields of elastography and ultrasound contrast for over 15 years , delivering multiple presentations worldwide on these subjects. He was the Principal Investigator on multiple contrast agent phase 2, 3 and 4 studies. Throughout decades of research, Richard has developed valuable relationships with multiple ultrasound vendors. Their collaboration has led to innovative improvements in medical ultrasound. Dr. Barr is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. Aunt Minnie, the largest and most comprehensive community website for medical imaging professionals worldwide, named him a semi-finalist for the most influential radiology researcher worldwide in 2018. Previously, Dr. Barr was selected as one of the 25 Most Influential in Radiology in 2007. Richard has also achieved Best Doctors in America status from 2007- 2018. He received the outstanding faculty member service teaching award in 2005 and the Research award in 2013 from Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Barr is also the chairman of the QIBA ultrasound contrast committee. Dr. Barr’s most recent research includes a decade long study on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and kidney tumors. The study concluded that CEUS is more accurate than CT or MRI exams in predicting kidney cancer and can eliminate the need for unnecessary biopsies and surgeries. Through his tenacity and that of his fellow colleagues, his employer, Southwoods Imaging, is one of the few locations in the United States to offer this game changing technology to its patients.
Dr. Barr’s list of credentials, accomplishments, research projects, involvement in professional societies, etc. is endless. His 49 page Curriculum Vitae gives credence to the fact that Dr. Barr is , and will continue to be, a consummate professional who will continue to make a significant impact in the medical world.
In addition to his plethora of medical pursuits, Richard strives to assist our Mahoning Valley residents, especially his fellow Campbellites. Richard and his late brother, Dennis, co-owned the Four Seasons Flea & Farm Market for over 20 yrs. When Dennis passed away in 2014, Dr. Barr become the sole owner of the market, which houses over 600 vendors. The market has given hundreds of people the opportunity to sell their wares and produce and has provided the area’s people with an affordable place to shop.
Although Dr. Barr is frequently traveling across the globe to teach and lecture, he still resides in Campbell, Ohio. Campbell is home, and he is proud to be one of the multitude of Red Devils who have changed our world. When John Kovach founded our association, Dr. Barr joined our ranks immediately and became a founding trustee. He also generously contributes to alumni activities and events. As someone who truly values education, Dr. Barr established the Dr. Richard Barr Scholarship for a Campbell graduate in 2017. This $2,000 award is renewable ,if specific requirements are met, for an additional three years, totaling $8,000. Dr. Barr’s magnanimous award will most certainly make a difference in the lives of our students.
It is certainly evident that in the medical world and beyond, Richard definitely “raises the Barr”. The CMHS Alumni Association is proud to honor his accomplishments and grateful for his many acts of generosity. It is our distinct privilege to induct Dr. Richard G. Barr into the Campbell Memorial High School Alumni Association’s 2019 Hall of Fame.
